Women are stepping up as leaders in India, driving the nation towards progress. This was the focus of a recent conference, “Celebrating Women Leadership,” hosted by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce and the Society of Indian Law Firms. The event took place just before International Women’s Day.
Chetan Sharma, the chief guest, emphasized that women have a crucial role as India develops. He noted that Indian culture has always celebrated women as the source of creativity and leadership. “Where women are honored, true divinity exists,” he said, highlighting the power and excellence women bring to leadership roles.
Nupur Sharma, the Guest of Honour, spoke about Prime Minister Modi’s push for more women in governance. She pointed out that there are many government initiatives aimed at empowering women, reflecting India’s respect for the feminine power, or Shakti.
Another speaker, Suvarna Raj, addressed the need for a change in how society views disability. She argued that limitations often stem from attitudes rather than physical realities. She called for better access and inclusive sports programs for children with disabilities, suggesting that recognizing Paralympians as role models could inspire change.
Senior legal expert Nina Gupta discussed the evolving landscape for women in law. Once dominated by men, the legal field now sees women leading in various capacities. However, she noted that societal norms still sometimes sideline women.
Lalit Bhasin, the conference chair, underscored the IACC’s commitment to gender-inclusive leadership, pointing out that all four regional directors are women. Manoj K Singh, in his address, highlighted that women naturally possess leadership qualities. Meanwhile, Pia Singh spoke about the need for equality between men and women to create a balanced society.
Health leader Upasana Arora reflected on India’s historical figures, like Ahilyabai Holkar and Rani Lakshmibai, who continue to inspire today’s leaders. The conference concluded with the Women Leadership Awards, honoring ten remarkable women from various fields like healthcare and law for their significant contributions.
Recent data shows increasing female participation in leadership roles. A study by McKinsey & Company noted that companies with women in top roles tend to perform better. This points to a growing recognition of women’s valuable perspectives in driving change.
Overall, the discussions at the conference reaffirmed that women’s leadership is essential for a brighter, more equitable future for India.
