Their heroism will never be forgotten.” Above this message, the plaque lists all law enforcement agencies involved in the Capitol’s defense, with the U.S. Capitol Police and Washington’s Metropolitan Police prominently featured.
This recognition comes two months after the Senate unanimously approved a resolution to create and install this plaque. The resolution was introduced by Senators Jeff Merkley and Thom Tillis after delays from previous plans outlined in a 2022 law aimed at acknowledging those who defended the Capitol.
The 2022 law mandated the installation of a plaque but faced setbacks. Speaker Mike Johnson had previously stated that the law was “not implementable,” causing further delays. Sen. Merkley emphasized the importance of recognizing these officers, stating that the plaque will remain in a publicly accessible area until both the House and Senate agree on a more permanent location.
Two officers who defended the Capitol, Harry Dunn and Daniel Hodges, have been vocal about the delays. Last year, they filed a lawsuit regarding the slow implementation of the 2022 law. Hodges expressed that while the plaque is a step forward, it doesn’t fully comply with the law. He believes a judicial ruling could further solidify its importance as a memorial.
Research on public perceptions reveals that discussions about the January 6 events have consistently polarized political opinions. A Pew Research survey from early 2023 showed that over 70% of Americans view the riot as a serious threat to democracy, demonstrating a stark divide in how people interpret and react to this event.
