Senior pitcher Citlaly Gutierrez and junior pitcher Teagan Kavan teamed up to lead No. 3 Texas Softball to a solid win against No. 24 South Carolina, clinching the series with a 3-0 victory. The game took place at Carolina Softball Stadium, marking another impressive chapter in Texas’s season.
With this win, the Longhorns improved their record to 21-1, making it 2-0 in their conference. They’ve currently won 19 straight games, the third-longest streak in team history, the longest since hitting a record of 24 wins in 2006. This year, Texas has managed to defeat eight ranked teams, demonstrating their strength on the field.
Gutierrez showcased her skills by pitching six scoreless innings. She struck out five batters while limiting South Carolina to just four hits. The seventh inning saw more action for the Longhorns. Senior catcher Reese Atwood led off with a walk, followed by junior first baseman Katie Stewart also earning a walk. Their efforts put runners in scoring positions. With no outs, junior shortstop Viviana Martinez executed a sacrifice bunt, moving the runners closer. Freshman designated player Hannah Wells capitalized on the opportunity, hitting a single that brought both runners home, extending Texas’s lead to 3-0.
Kavan returned to the mound and closed out the game, sealing the win for the Longhorns and clinching the series victory.
