Duke had an impressive second half, winning against Carolina 76-61. The standout stat? Duke scored 24 points off turnovers, the highest for any team against UNC this season.
In the second half, Duke made a game-changing 16-0 run. They hit three three-pointers during this stretch, transforming a close match into a dominant performance. Over nearly half of the second half, they went on a 24-2 run, making six three-pointers overall.
The Tar Heels had a great chance to take the lead at 41-40 with 18:30 left but missed a crucial three-pointer. Duke capitalized, outscoring UNC 28-6 in the next eleven minutes. The Heels struggled, going over ten minutes without a basket.
Maliq Brown shone for Duke on senior day. He contributed with 15 points, nine rebounds, and five steals. His defensive presence limited UNC’s Henri Veesaar, who attempted only one shot in the second half.
Carolina faced a tough first half, making just one field goal over 11 possessions and committing four turnovers. This allowed Duke to take a commanding lead, finishing the first half at 12-2 in points off turnovers. The final tally was 24-4 in this category.
Duke’s defense created chaos, forcing UNC into mistakes while only committing eight turnovers themselves. One moment highlighted this—after a Duke turnover, Carolina immediately returned the favor with a turnover of their own.
Caleb Wilson’s absence was felt, especially on the boards. Carolina had been slightly outrebounding teams without him, but Duke dominated the glass, 42-29, including 18 offensive rebounds. This disparity led to Duke attempting 16 more shots and 11 more free throws. In the second half alone, Duke dominated rebounding with 24 to Carolina’s 10.
Although Carolina shot decently at 45.3% overall and 37.5% from three, they struggled to match Duke’s number of scoring chances.
For the Tar Heels, Derek Dixon stepped up with a career-high 17 points. He made five three-pointers and played 32 minutes without a turnover, showing his potential to support the team in crucial moments.
As the regular season wraps up, Carolina finishes at 24-7, 12-6. Their next challenge will likely be against Clemson in the ACC Tournament, set for Thursday night.
