UConn Women’s Hockey Team Wins Championship
The UConn women’s hockey team clinched its second Hockey East Tournament Championship on Saturday by defeating top-seeded Northeastern 2-1 in double overtime. Senior captain Kyla Josifovic scored the game-winner, securing a spot for UConn in the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years.
Goaltender Tia Chan was a standout, making an impressive 57 saves, including 33 during overtime. This performance marked her 26th win of the season, setting a new record for the program.
The game started with both teams trading shots but neither found the net in the first period, with UConn slightly ahead in shots, 12-11. The Huskies earned a power play but couldn’t capitalize, and the period ended scoreless.
In the second period, UConn’s Sadie Hotles scored early, making it 1-0. However, Northeastern quickly equalized with a power-play goal from Rylie Jones. Despite UConn outshooting Northeastern 17-8 in this period, the score remained tied at 1-1 heading into the third.
In the final period, UConn ramped up its offense but couldn’t break through Northeastern’s goalie, Lisa Jönsson. The Huskies’ defense was also strong, blocking a season-high 39 shots, led by seniors Emma Eryou and Meghane Duchesne-Chalifoux.
With the score still tied after the first overtime, both teams continued to battle in the second. Chan made critical saves, keeping UConn in the game until Josifovic found the net with just minutes left, sealing the win.
While Northeastern had a slight edge in shots, 58-56, UConn dominated in faceoffs, winning 48 out of 83. The Huskies were 0-for-3 on power plays, and Northeastern converted once.
UConn now awaits Selection Sunday on March 8, as they hope for another chance at NCAA glory.
