Join the Movement: Local Community Raises Funds for Churches United and Dorothy Day Food Pantry!

MOORHEAD, MN – This weekend, the community rallied together for a cause close to the heart: fighting hunger. The “Empty Bowls” fundraiser took place at Swing Barrel Brewing Company, with local organizers joining forces to support Churches United.

For a ticket price of $35, attendees received a unique, handcrafted bowl made by local artisans and enjoyed a variety of delicious soups from well-loved restaurants like Rustica and the Fryin’ Pan. Every dollar spent went directly to the Dorothy Day Food Pantry, a resource that Churches United greatly values.

Pastor Devlyn Brooks, CEO of Churches United, expressed gratitude for the event’s collaboration. He noted, “You have the arts scene, the restaurant scene, and the brewery, all coming together to say, ‘We see you, and we appreciate the vital work you do.’” This sentiment highlights the strong community support behind the food pantry.

The need for assistance at the food pantry remains critical, although the situation has improved compared to last year, when SNAP benefits were frozen. Despite this progress, Churches United continues to require extra supplies to meet growing demands.

Recent surveys indicate that food insecurity is a pressing issue. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as of 2021, about 10.5% of households were food insecure at some point during the year. Community-driven initiatives like the Empty Bowls fundraiser are essential in addressing these challenges.

Such events also reflect a trend in social responsibility, where local businesses and artists contribute to meaningful causes. This sense of unity fosters not only connections within the community but also empowers individuals facing hardships.
