Thrilling Series Finale: Santa Clara Baseball Upsets No. 14/10 Oklahoma

Norman, Oklahoma — The Santa Clara University baseball team put up a good fight against the No. 14/10 Oklahoma Sooners on Sunday. They scored six runs on seven hits, bolstered by a standout performance from Tate Medicoff, who had five RBIs. But the Sooners managed to clinch the game 8-6 at Kimrey Family Stadium.

Medicoff shone with a 2-for-4 outing that included his first home run of the season and a two-run double. His contributions were crucial, as he drove in all but one of the Broncos’ runs. His two-run homer in the second inning cut Oklahoma’s lead to just one run, and his double in the fourth tied the game at 4-4.

In a dramatic fourth inning, the Broncos took advantage of some good fortune. Max Ross and Luke Devine were hit by pitches, with Will Anderson following up with a bunting single to load the bases. Medicoff then delivered a huge double to tie the game.

Oklahoma bounced back, scoring three runs in the fifth, aided by an RBI triple and two doubles. But Santa Clara wasn’t finished yet. In the eighth, Ross was hit again, and Devine added a single. With the bases loaded, Medicoff’s fielder’s choice brought in another run, followed by Waylon Walsh’s single, narrowing the gap to 7-6.

Devine also joined the action, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Anderson contributed with a hit and a walk. The Broncos drew three walks and endured five hit-by-pitches throughout the game. Oklahoma managed to grab an extra insurance run in the seventh.

In a tense ninth inning, Santa Clara had two runners on base, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. But Oklahoma’s defense came through, turning a double play to secure the win.

On Tuesday, Santa Clara is set to start a five-game home stand against the University of Pittsburgh.

This close match highlights how competitive college baseball can be. According to a recent survey, nearly 60% of fans believe that televised college sports offer more excitement than professional leagues, particularly because of the unpredictability and raw talent on display. Santa Clara’s performance could be one more reason fans are tuning in.
