Los Angeles Chargers Sign Pro Bowl Fullback Alec Ingold: What This Means for the Team’s Future

The Los Angeles Chargers have landed Pro Bowl fullback Alec Ingold on a multi-year contract. Ingold is recognized as one of the best in his position and reunites with Chargers Offensive Coordinator Mike McDaniel. They previously worked together in Miami, where Ingold was a significant part of the Dolphins’ explosive offense.

Ingold has played in 68 games with Miami, starting 48. His contributions helped the Dolphins boast the NFL’s top offense in 2023, averaging 401.3 net yards per game and excelling in passing with 265.5 yards per game. Over his four seasons with the team, Ingold was pivotal in ranking the offense as the eighth best in the league.

Before joining the Dolphins, he played three seasons with the Raiders after going undrafted. In 2020, he contributed to the Raiders ranking eighth in total offense. By 2021, they finished with the sixth-best passing offense. Throughout his seven-year career, Ingold has started 58 out of 107 regular-season games, racking up 611 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 75 catches and adding 56 rushing yards with two scores. He’s also paved the way for four 1,000-yard rushers, including Josh Jacobs, who earned the Offensive Rookie of the Year title in 2019.

Ingold’s journey began in college at the University of Wisconsin. He played 51 games from 2015 to 2018, making 11 starts at fullback. Starting as a linebacker, he transitioned successfully and finished his college career with 343 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. Ingold averaged a touchdown every 5.6 touches. His leadership was evident as a team captain in 2018, helping the Badgers secure four bowl wins and achieve top-10 rankings twice.

This contract marks a vital step for the Chargers, as they look to enhance their offensive strategy. Ingold’s experience and skill set will likely play a critical role in their upcoming seasons.

It’s interesting to note that fullbacks have often been overlooked in modern football. However, experts recognize their value in creating space for running backs and protecting quarterbacks. As offenses become more pass-heavy, having a versatile fullback like Ingold becomes even more crucial. As we see trends in player signings, relying on versatile and experienced athletes could provide teams with a competitive advantage.
