In an exciting development for India’s wildlife, a Namibian cheetah named Jwala has given birth to five cubs at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. This brings the total population of cheetahs in India to 53.
Union Forest Minister Bhupender Yadav and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav shared the news on social media, celebrating this important milestone. Yadav highlighted that Jwala, now a mother for the third time, has contributed significantly to the cheetah population, with this being her tenth successful litter in India.
“This achievement is a proud moment for wildlife conservation,” said CM Yadav. “It shows the success of our cheetah reintroduction efforts.”
Jwala first gave birth in March 2023 and has since had two more litters, totaling 13 cubs. Of these, nine are currently alive, including Mukhi, the first cub born in India.
Today, India hosts 53 cheetahs, including three at Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary and 50 at Kuno National Park. Among these, nine were recently brought from Botswana. This effort is part of a larger initiative aimed at restoring the cheetah population, which has seen a dramatic decline in the past decades.
Experts emphasize the importance of such conservation projects. According to a study by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), focused efforts can help revive endangered species, benefiting entire ecosystems.
In recent years, wildlife enthusiasts have taken to social media, sharing updates and reactions about the cheetahs. The public response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing excitement about the growing numbers.
As this project continues, Jwala and her cubs symbolize hope for wildlife conservation in India.
