Tamil Nadu is taking exciting steps to measure the impact of tree-planting in urban areas. A new plan focuses on how expanding green spaces can help tackle climate change and boost the environment in cities.

This roadmap aims to create a scientific method for tracking the many environmental benefits of urban tree programs. Planting trees doesn’t just beautify our streets; it helps capture carbon, cool down city temperatures, recharge groundwater, manage floods, and stabilize ecosystems in fast-growing urban areas.

This initiative is part of a collaboration with Germany to support climate action in India. Experts working on the project stress the need for clear indicators. These indicators will help us understand the environmental benefits of tree-planting better, which can then be included in city planning and sustainability strategies.

Historically, Tamil Nadu’s tree-planting programs have aimed at increasing green cover and enhancing biodiversity. However, the broader climate advantages of these efforts haven’t been consistently tracked. This gap in data has made it challenging to incorporate urban forestry outcomes into policies and investment decisions.

In recent years, Tamil Nadu has ramped up tree-planting efforts through the Green Tamil Nadu Mission. From 2022 to 2026, over 14.16 crore seedlings are set to be planted over an area of about 1.28 lakh hectares. Early estimates suggest these trees could absorb between 200,000 to 300,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.

While we await detailed data on urban plantings, initial figures indicate around 2.5 million seedlings have been planted in cities already. Plans for this year include another 700,000 seedlings.

Despite this progress, urban forestry initiatives face hurdles. One major challenge is the limited land available in cities. Moreover, maintaining these green spaces is crucial for their longevity. The new framework will measure both the cooling effects of trees and their ability to adapt to climate change.

Trees help lower temperatures through shade and moisture release. They also improve soil drainage during heavy rains, reducing flooding risks. To gather this information, researchers will measure how much carbon dioxide trees can absorb, based on their size and growth.

However, implementing this monitoring system isn’t without its challenges. There’s a lack of baseline environmental data, field staff need more training, and modern monitoring tools like remote sensing are underutilized.

To tackle these challenges, the roadmap suggests a phased approach. This includes pilot studies, policy guidance, and training programs. By integrating climate benefit assessments into existing urban forestry schemes, Tamil Nadu hopes to enhance environmental planning and better track the long-term benefits of its tree-planting initiatives.

As cities grow, the role of urban forestry becomes even more critical. By understanding and measuring these environmental benefits, Tamil Nadu can lead the way in creating a sustainable, greener future.
