Tommy DeCarlo, the lead singer of the rock band Boston, has sadly passed away at the age of 60. His family confirmed his death on Facebook, sharing that he had been diagnosed with brain cancer the previous September. They described him as a fighter who showed strength and courage until the end and requested privacy during this difficult time.
DeCarlo grew up as a fan of Boston. He learned to sing by listening to the band’s classic hits. In a biography on the Boston website, he expressed how much he admired the original singer, Brad Delp, saying, “It wasn’t like I was trying to sing like Brad, it was just that I loved to sing along with him.”
Boston rose to fame in the mid-1970s. Their debut album, released in 1976, went platinum quickly, thanks to songs like “More Than a Feeling.” By 1990, it was certified diamond. After a long break, they released Third Stage in 1986, which included their only Number One hit, “Amanda.”
Before joining Boston, DeCarlo worked at Home Depot in Charlotte, North Carolina, while performing in local rock bands. After Delp’s tragic death in 2007, DeCarlo wrote a tribute song and shared it on MySpace. He later reached out to Boston’s team and caught the attention of guitarist Tom Scholz. DeCarlo’s voice reminded Scholz of Delp’s, leading to his invitation to join the band.
For nearly two decades, DeCarlo toured with Boston and contributed to their 2013 album, Life, Love & Hope. He also formed a band with his son, releasing two albums: Lightning Strikes Twice in 2020 and Dancing in the Moonlight in 2022.
In a 2015 interview, DeCarlo reflected on how incredible it was to perform with his favorite band. “It’s almost indescribable,” he said. “It’s an amazing feeling that fans and band members share together in that moment of music.”
