What began as a surprising opportunity has blossomed into an exciting career for Melissa Hice, a senior in the Health Administration program at Pickaway-Ross Career & Technology Center in Chillicothe.
Last year, Melissa found herself unexpectedly entering the Ohio Business Professionals of America (BPA) competition. She qualified when someone else had to drop out and thought of it as just a fun experience. “I didn’t really expect to go,” she said. “It was kind of just for fun.”
This year, however, she was focused. With a year of training under her belt, she took the BPA competition more seriously and earned first place in Health Insurance and Medical Billing. This win qualifies her for the national competition in Nashville.
Her instructor, Ms. Darcie Scott, notes the change in Melissa’s approach: “She genuinely wants to learn and spends her free time studying for certifications and competitions.”
A key part of Melissa’s growth was her internship at Hopewell Health. There, she gained real-world experience in medical billing. “I learned a lot about the terminology and how the whole billing process works,” she shared. This hands-on training was invaluable.
Melissa’s performance impressed her supervisors, leading to a job offer as a Temp Revenue Cycle Specialist before she even graduates. Terah Ramsey, the Director of Billing at Hopewell, praised Melissa: “She demonstrated a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn.” Her growth has been noticeable, making her a valued team member.
Now, Melissa is keen to build a long-term career. Originally unsure about her career path, she found a passion in Health Administration. “I know I want to become a certified coding professional,” she said. “It’s something I can keep learning about for a long time.”
Her journey reflects the advantages of hands-on learning through technical education. By gaining experience in a real healthcare environment while still in high school, Melissa developed essential skills that prepare her for both competitions and actual work.
Melissa is not alone in her success. Her classmate, Mariah Barrera, also qualified for the national BPA competition, having achieved a Top 10 finish in Medical Coding. Mariah too interned at Hopewell Health, earning high praise for her dedication.
These students symbolize the future of healthcare support services, showcasing the critical role programs like Pickaway-Ross CTC play in bridging education and real-world experience. Ramsey emphasizes how these opportunities benefit not just students, but local communities by strengthening the workforce.
As Melissa and Mariah prepare for nationals, their accomplishments inspire others in the program. “We’re all just so proud of them both,” Ms. Scott noted. Together, they represent the high standards and readiness of Pickaway-Ross’s Health Administration program.
