Revolutionizing Travel: House Panel Report Unveils Bharat-Made Trainsets for Upcoming Bullet Train Operations

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Line is set to be India’s first bullet train project, with operations expected to start using a locally manufactured train. The project, spanning 508 kilometers, aims to connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad, boosting travel speeds and efficiency.

The first section, from Surat to Vapi (97 km), is likely to open in August 2027. The Indian bullet train will run at a maximum speed of 280 km/h, with two train sets currently under development in Bengaluru.

Recently, there has been uncertainty about whether a Japanese bullet train would operate on this stretch. The project still involves collaboration with Japan, which is working on its E10 Series Shinkansen train. However, exact deployment dates remain unclear due to challenges in sourcing these trains.

A representative of the Ministry of Railways emphasized quite a few advantages of focusing on indigenous production. They mentioned that the first commercial service will start in Surat, and a robust signaling system is already in place to support these ambitious speed targets. The greater goal is to develop a self-sufficient high-speed rail industry in India.

In the Budget for 2026-27, the government identified several more high-speed corridors, including connections between major cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Hyderabad. Many of these projects are already moving ahead, with detailed project reports submitted for approval.

Experts suggest that India’s focus on homegrown technology can lead to quicker project completion and lower costs. The standing committee on Railways noted that studying successful high-speed networks from other countries could provide valuable lessons to enhance India’s rail system.

However, the project’s costs have faced challenges. Initially approved at ₹97,636 crore in December 2015, the overall estimate has now nearly doubled to around ₹1.98 lakh crore due to factors like inflation, increased land acquisition costs, and additional infrastructure needs.
