Lawrence, Indiana, is making strides in sustainability by joining a climate fellowship program this summer. Mayor Deb Whitfield shared that the city will host an environmental fellow through the McKinney Urban Green Fellowship, which is part of the Indiana University Environmental Resilience Institute.
Lawrence is one of four communities in Indiana selected for this program. The city will work alongside Richmond, Evansville, and Dearborn County on projects focused on climate resilience. The fellow will begin on May 18 and will mainly concentrate on developing an urban forest and arbor program, alongside other environmental efforts.
This fellowship is significant. City officials estimate it will contribute over $80,000 in value through the fellow’s work. Whitfield expressed pride in this partnership, linking it to the city’s “Live Longer in Lawrence” campaign. Funding for this program comes from the Urban Green Governance Grant, which is supported by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Historically, Lawrence has undergone substantial redevelopment since the closing of Fort Benjamin Harrison in 1996. With a population of about 50,000, the city is keen on promoting sustainability and health under Whitfield’s leadership.
