Doctors at the Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at AIIMS in New Delhi are urging everyone to pay attention to glaucoma. This eye disease causes irreversible blindness but often goes unnoticed until it’s too late. Leading up to World Glaucoma Awareness Week, ophthalmologist Dr. Tanuj Dada emphasized the need for early screening and proactive lifestyle choices.
“Glaucoma is the silent thief of vision,” Dr. Dada explained. It quietly damages the optic nerve without obvious symptoms. That’s why regular eye exams are crucial, especially for those over 40.
Stress can worsen glaucoma. “Just like it raises blood pressure, stress can increase eye pressure, a key factor in glaucoma,” said Dr. Dada. Addressing stress is essential in managing the disease.
AIIMS is exploring how lifestyle changes can aid glaucoma management. Daily practices like yoga, breathing exercises, and meditation for just 15 to 30 minutes can lower stress and potentially reduce intraocular pressure. “These simple activities can enhance the quality of life for patients,” Dr. Dada noted.
Advancements in technology are also playing a role. AI is becoming a valuable tool in eye health. AIIMS has developed a platform that analyzes retinal images, making it easier to spot eye diseases early, even in remote areas. Early detection through this technology could help prevent needless blindness.
Current estimates indicate that over 70 million people worldwide are affected by glaucoma, with numbers expected to rise as populations age. This highlights the urgency in creating awareness and promoting preventive measures.
Overall, staying informed and proactive can make a huge difference in fighting glaucoma. Regular check-ups, stress management, and simple lifestyle changes can protect vision for years to come. For more information on glaucoma and eye health, you can visit the World Health Organization.
