Misbahu Mahama Adams, the MP for Mion, is calling on Ghanaians to unite in protecting our environment, especially during Ramadan. He highlighted the intense heat in Northern Ghana as a warning about the urgent need for stronger action against climate change.
Mr. Adams pointed out that the ongoing heatwave is a clear sign of how climate change affects communities, livelihoods, and public health. While Muslims fast and reflect spiritually during this holy month, many in the north are struggling with high temperatures that complicate their daily lives.
He emphasized that taking care of our environment is both a civic duty and a moral one. Islamic teachings support this idea; even the Prophet Muhammad encouraged tree planting and responsible care for nature. In Islam, actions that benefit others, animals, and the environment count as acts of charity.
Mr. Adams urged Parliament, government bodies, NGOs, and communities to boost efforts in conservation. Simple actions like tree planting and sustainable farming practices can help combat climate change and protect those most at risk from extreme weather.
Using this opportunity, he also shared warm Ramadan wishes with Muslims, urging them to fast mindfully. He advised them to stay hydrated and avoid dehydration and heat-related illnesses due to the current weather. Staying well-hydrated from Iftar to Suhoor, limiting sun exposure, and avoiding heavy activities during the hottest hours can make fasting safer.
Eating nutritious meals, particularly fruits and other water-rich foods, can help maintain energy during fasting. This Ramadan, Mr. Adams encouraged everyone to reflect on our connection with the environment. By committing to sustainable practices, we can protect our planet for the future.
Interestingly, recent studies show that climate change is making extreme weather events more frequent. The World Meteorological Organization reported that last year was one of the hottest on record. This trend emphasizes the importance of our actions today.
As we fast and reflect this Ramadan, let’s remember that protecting the environment is essential for a healthy future.
