Isa Briones is stepping into the spotlight as Connie Francis in the Broadway musical Just in Time. This role marks her return to Broadway after debuting in Hadestown just last March.
Starting April 1, Briones will shine alongside Matthew Morrison, who plays Bobby Darin. Later on, she’ll share the stage with Jeremy Jordan beginning April 21.
Briones, known for her part as Dr. Trinity Santos on The Pitt, has a rich theater background. She previously toured with Hamilton and performed in Next to Normal. When asked about taking on the role of Francis, a beloved singer from the 1950s and ‘60s, she shared that it allows her to embrace that iconic vocal style. “It’s nice to do something that really just feels like joy for two hours,” she said after her first rehearsal.
Her career has been a blend of theater and television, including roles in Disney+’s Goosebumps and Paramount+’s Star Trek: Picard. She noted that the transition between The Pitt and theater feels natural for her. “It’s been quite a vibe for the last year-and-a-half,” she remarked.
Briones’ character in The Pitt even sings a Filipino lullaby to a patient, a nod to her roots. She consulted her father, Broadway actor Jon Jon Briones, for help selecting the song. “The Pitt plays to people’s strengths,” she explained, “and since they knew I could sing, they were like, ‘Alright, let’s do it.’”
Despite facing challenges, including an emergency appendectomy while filming, Briones pushed through. After her surgery, she joked, “Honestly, thank you for having appendicitis, because we needed two days,” referring to the production team’s schedule.
Now, as she joins Just in Time, Briones feels prepared. Having gone through the rigorous demands of Broadway’s eight-show weeks in Hadestown, she reflects, “I learned a lot from doing it. I loved it and can now look back and say, ‘I know what I can do better now.’”
As she embarks on this new journey, Briones is ready to share her passion for music and storytelling. It’s not just a role for her; it’s a celebration of her artistic journey.
