Quebec is bracing for a significant freezing rain storm today, causing school closures and travel disruptions. Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued an “orange alert” for much of southern Quebec, predicting freezing rain accumulation of up to 30 millimeters.
By 6 a.m., some areas, including Montreal, were expected to see the freezing rain start, but this has since been delayed. As meteorologist Simon Legault noted, we can expect intense periods of rain throughout the day, alongside strong winds that could reach 60 kilometers per hour. These conditions may lead to hazardous road conditions and possible power outages.
Already, over 150 flights have been canceled at Montreal’s Trudeau Airport due to poor weather conditions. Both city officials and the provincial government are urging residents to limit non-essential travel. According to a recent survey, about 70% of Quebec residents plan to stay home during severe weather events, reflecting a cautious approach toward their safety.
In Montreal, the city began treating streets and sidewalks with salt overnight to prepare for the storm. Riders on public transit should expect delays, as drivers are being advised to exercise extra caution during the storm. The STM’s Kevin Bilodeau confirmed that updates on service status will be provided as the situation unfolds.
Farther afield, cities like Quebec City are advising residents to work from home if they can. The Quebec Transport Ministry has its road-clearing crews on standby, anticipating the range of precipitation across the province could complicate efforts. This storm also follows severe flooding in the Yamaska area, where rising water levels have forced some evacuations.
Adding to the mix, areas in eastern Quebec are under a winter storm warning, with forecasts predicting up to 40 centimeters of snow in the coming day. This diverse weather pattern highlights the urgency for residents to remain vigilant and prepared as the storm progresses.
