Indian Students Evacuate from Conflict-Ridden Iran
As tensions escalate in West Asia, Indian students stranded in Iran are beginning their journey home. The first group is expected to arrive through Armenia soon.
Over 1,200 students, primarily studying MBBS, found themselves in danger after their universities refused to postpone exams scheduled for March 5. Despite an advisory from the Indian Embassy on February 23, urging Indian nationals to leave Iran promptly, many students felt trapped.
The first batch of students left by bus to the Armenia border. They are studying at institutions like Tehran University of Medical Sciences and Iran University of Medical Sciences. Following airstrikes, the Indian Embassy relocated them to Qom for safety.
Naseema Bano, the mother of a fifth-year student at Urmia University, shared her concern. Her daughter plans to travel to Azerbaijan on March 17, with a self-booked ticket costing around ₹50,000. Many students have expressed panic as airstrikes increased in intensity.
After reaching Armenia, students will fly from Zvartnots International Airport to Delhi on March 15, according to the All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA), which is helping coordinate the evacuation. However, some messages indicated that flights might be canceled. AIMSA president Dr. Mohammad Momin Khan reassured them that flights are still on schedule, but students remain anxious.
To ensure the safety of the evacuated students, the Indian External Affairs Ministry advised them to avoid sharing personal details on social media. The Jammu & Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) is also working to help arrange transportation from Delhi back to Kashmir.
The need for swift action is crucial. According to recent studies, overseas Indian students constitute a significant portion of India’s educational diaspora, with over 750,000 studying globally. Events like these highlight the vulnerabilities they face in crisis situations.
As situations unfold, many families continue to hope for the safe return of their loved ones.
