Evacuation of Indian Students from Iran Amid Ongoing Conflict
The situation in West Asia remains tense, prompting the evacuation of Indian students from Iran. The first group is now on its way home through Armenia.
Over 1,200 Indian students, primarily studying medicine, find themselves in this war-torn region. Their universities scheduled exams for March 5, even after the Indian Embassy advised students to leave by February 23. The urgency increased as students felt the impact of nearby airstrikes.
The initial batch of students has been transported to the Armenian border. They are mainly from Tehran University of Medical Sciences and Shahid Beheshti University. After widespread panic due to airstrikes, the Indian Embassy moved them to Qom for safety.
Naseema Bano, whose daughter studies at Urmia University, shared that her daughter will travel to Azerbaijan before heading to New Delhi. They booked a ticket for around ₹50,000, reflecting the rising anxiety among students amid the conflict.
These students will fly from Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan, Armenia, arriving at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on March 15. The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) is assisting the evacuation, coordinating with Indian authorities.
However, there have been concerns about flight cancellations. Some students received messages about changes, but AIMSA’s president, Dr. Mohammad Momin Khan, assured that flights for the first group are still set to proceed.
“Currently, only flights on March 17 are showing as cancelled,” he added, acknowledging the ongoing worries among the students.
In addition to coordinating travel, the Indian External Affairs Ministry has urged students in Iran to keep their exact locations private on social media. This precaution helps ensure their safety.
To support returning students, the Jammu & Kashmir government has arranged transportation from the airport back to Kashmir.
The evacuation highlights the urgency surrounding safety in conflict zones. Many students have expressed fear and uncertainty during this ordeal, sharing their experiences online and calling for help. This situation reflects a broader trend where students in crisis zones advocate for international attention.
