Recent Discussions Between India and Iran
India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, has recently engaged in talks with Iranian Foreign Minister multiple times. These discussions primarily focused on maritime safety and India’s energy security, a crucial topic given the current regional tensions.
During a media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted, “The last conversation emphasized the safety of shipping routes and how it affects India.” The maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz is vital for oil shipments, which could significantly impact India’s energy needs.
Currently, about 9,000 Indian nationals, including students and professionals, are in Iran. Many are looking for ways to return home amidst the ongoing conflict. Indian embassies are offering support to those wanting to travel via neighboring Azerbaijan and Armenia.
As Jaiswal explained, “We’ve assisted several students in returning since we issued advisories.” The Indian government is keen to ensure the safety of its citizens overseas, especially in challenging times.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been proactive, reaching out to leaders in the Gulf region. He emphasized the importance of dialogue and the need for peace. With a large Indian community in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, protecting civilians is a top priority for India.
In related news, India granted permission for three ships from Iran to dock at its ports at the end of February. The IRIS Lavan, for instance, has already arrived in Kochi, with its crew now under Indian naval protection.
On the energy front, India is a significant player in the refined petroleum market. Recently, Bangladesh has requested diesel supplies, which India is currently reviewing. Jaiswal pointed out, “Since 2007, we’ve supplied diesel to Bangladesh through various means. We’ll continue to assess our capacity and needs in the future.” Similar requests have emerged from Sri Lanka and the Maldives, demonstrating the regional reliance on India for energy resources.
As relationships between nations evolve, India’s approach remains focused on cooperation and a collaborative spirit in addressing common challenges.
