Mumbai Welcomes First Oil Tanker Since Iran-US Tensions Escalated
A Liberian tanker, Shenlong Suezmax, just made headlines as the first ship to reach Mumbai Port since rising tensions between Iran and the US erupted. The tanker loaded Saudi crude oil from Ras Tanura on March 1, setting sail on March 3. It passed through the Strait of Hormuz on March 8, but then went off the tracking grid temporarily.
Why the secrecy? The tanker switched off its Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponder while navigating through the risky waters. This system usually helps other vessels track its position and course. It reappeared on tracking screens on March 9.
After its journey, the Shenlong Suezmax docked in Mumbai at 1 PM and berthed at Jawahar Dweep by 6:06 PM. It’s transporting around 135,335 metric tonnes of crude oil, set for refineries in Mahul, eastern Mumbai. The unloading process is expected to take about 36 hours.
The ship is managed by Dynacom Tanker Management from Athens, with a crew of 29 people, including Indian, Pakistani, and Filipino nationals. It’s notable that an Indian captain leads this diverse team.
Tensions in the region have been high. Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) recently warned that ships sailing through the Strait must get Iran’s approval. Two vessels that ignored these warnings faced consequences.
This strait is crucial for global oil trade. Over 20 million barrels of crude oil flow through daily, accounting for about a fifth of the world’s oil consumption. Any disruptions here can impact markets and household expenses across the globe.
India’s Shipping Ministry has been proactive, monitoring the safety of 28 Indian-flagged vessels currently in the Persian Gulf. Most of these ships are stationed west of the Strait of Hormuz, with Indian crewmembers aboard. A 24-hour control room has been functional since late February to ensure their safety and coordinate assistance.
Now, as the world watches, the flow of oil and the safety of vessels in this region remain critical. An increase in safety measures and monitoring might be essential to navigate the complexities of this strategic waterway.
