This year, I had the incredible chance to work at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival®—something I’ve looked forward to since I started my journey at FIU. With my camera in hand, I watched students bustling about, plating gourmet dishes, mixing cocktails, and promoting sustainability. It was a fantastic glimpse into the heart of hospitality.
As a marketing assistant for the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, I participated in seven events during the festival. Each moment wasn’t just about food; it was a celebration of passion and dedication in Miami’s vibrant culinary scene.
One of the highlights was witnessing the FIU Green Team’s sustainability initiatives. Around 500 students collaborated to make the event as eco-friendly as possible. This effort gave me a deeper appreciation for creating experiences that are fun while also being responsible towards our planet.
I was thrilled to experience Wine Spectator’s Best of the Best event. It was fascinating to see how students dedicated themselves to every little detail—from preparation to execution, making sure everything was just right.
I had the privilege of interviewing successful FIU alumni who are thriving in the hospitality industry. Hearing their stories was super inspiring. Meeting Guy Fieri was a dream come true for me, having grown up watching him on shows like Guy’s Grocery Games and Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I also spoke with Aarti Sequeira, who shared valuable advice for students:
“Experience goes beyond the book. Take every opportunity you can. Often, it’s in the moments where you stretch yourself that you learn the most. Keep being brave; it’s a lifelong journey.”
Her words encouraged everyone to step outside their comfort zones, a reminder that growth often comes from challenging ourselves.
While I study public relations and advertising, the festival reinforced the idea that hospitality can be woven into any career. These moments will inspire me to create lasting experiences, focusing on service and storytelling that resonate beyond the event itself.
In a world where sustainability is becoming increasingly important, the festival underscored how the hospitality industry is evolving. A recent survey revealed that 72% of consumers prioritize businesses that practice sustainability, showing a strong demand for responsible hospitality.
This experience was not just about enjoying food and meeting celebrities; it was about understanding the value of hard work, community, and creativity in hospitality. The festival has motivated me to embrace service in all that I do.
