Last year, she visited the synagogue to talk about hate crimes and domestic terrorism. Unfortunately, those concerns materialized when a suspect drove a vehicle loaded with explosives into the building. “Here we are today, facing an act of domestic terrorism right at that same spot,” Nessel remarked.
Security guards responded swiftly, firing at the suspect. Nessel praised their training and readiness. Law enforcement is investigating carefully to ensure there was no other suspect, but it appears the person found dead in the vehicle was the attacker.
Nessel is troubled by the rising antisemitism in America. “People may fear going to synagogues or other Jewish spaces,” she said. She urged everyone to speak out against the hate growing in American politics, observing that both parties share some responsibility.
Current global conflicts also seem to be fueling local tensions. “There’s a clear link between the war in Iran and what happened today,” Nessel noted. The choice of Temple Israel as a target feels significant, given its name.
Antisemitism is increasingly troubling. A 2022 survey showed a 34% rise in anti-Jewish incidents compared to the previous year. This data highlights a pressing need for awareness and action in combating hate.
