Ernie Anastos, a cherished news anchor in the Tri-State area, has passed away at the age of 82. He left a lasting impression over his nearly 50-year career, particularly during his 11 years at Eyewitness News where he became the face of the 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. broadcasts.
Born to be in the spotlight, Anastos also graced several New York stations, including WCBS, WWOR, and WNYW. Most recently, he hosted “Positively Ernie” on WABC 770 AM. Anastos was known for reporting major events, from the tragic World Trade Center attacks to the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.
He gained recognition for his talent, winning over 30 Emmy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Emmy. His notable stories included the heartbreaking announcement of John Lennon’s death on December 8, 1980, an event many still recall vividly. Anastos was more than a news anchor; he was a trusted figure and a staple at community gatherings.
