Four individuals were arrested after an arson attack at a synagogue in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The incident happened early in the morning, around 3:40 a.m., and appears to be linked to a growing wave of antisemitic violence in Europe.
Authorities reported that the fire was started by an explosive device. Thankfully, it self-extinguished, and no one was hurt. The police apprehended the suspects near another synagogue after noticing a vehicle driving erratically. The arrested men are aged 17, 18, and 19.
This incident is part of a disturbing trend. Recently, there have been several attacks on Jewish communities outside the Middle East. For example, in Belgium, an explosion rocked a synagogue in Liège, which local officials deemed an antisemitic act.
In Michigan, a different synagogue was targeted in a car-ramming attack. Although the motive in that case isn’t fully understood, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel highlighted a potential link between the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the attack, noting that the suspect targeted a synagogue named Temple Israel.
These events raise serious concerns about rising antisemitism in parts of the world. According to a survey by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), nearly 60% of American Jews reported experiencing antisemitism in 2021, a significant increase from previous years.
