Recent Tragedy in Oman: An Overview
In a tragic event on Friday, two Indian nationals lost their lives in a drone strike in Sohar, Oman. This incident marks the first fatalities among Indians on land since tensions escalated between the US and Iran on February 28. In total, five Indians have now died in relation to ongoing conflicts in the region.
Aseem Mahajan, Joint Secretary (Gulf) at the Ministry of External Affairs, shared these updates during a media briefing. He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. Alongside the two fatalities, ten people were injured, with most being Indian nationals. Fortunately, five of the injured have since been discharged, while others continue to receive care at local hospitals.
While details about the attack remain limited, Oman’s news source reported that two drones were involved, one of which struck an industrial area, resulting in the tragic deaths.
The incident has prompted India to step up its diplomatic efforts to secure the safety of approximately ten million Indians living in West Asia. In recent days, around 150,000 Indians have returned home due to the escalating conflict. The government is also working to ensure the safe passage of various Indian-flagged merchant vessels in the region.
Mahajan additionally mentioned that 15 crew members from a US-owned oil tanker were safely relocated to a hotel after their ship was attacked near Basra, Iraq. Sadly, one Indian crew member was killed in that incident. Efforts are underway to repatriate his remains to India.
As tensions continue, the Ministry has been urging all parties involved to engage in dialogue and de-escalation. They are also in contact with BRICS nations to foster a collective approach to the crisis.
This tragic situation highlights the dangers faced by Indians in conflict zones abroad and the importance of diplomatic efforts to protect their safety.
