Daniel Shy, a recent graduate from SUNY Empire State University’s human services program, has won the prestigious Norman R. McConney Jr. Award for Student Excellence. This award honors outstanding students from the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). Daniel is one of only 49 students to receive this recognition this year.
The award is named after Norman R. McConney Jr., a key figure in the establishment of the EOP in 1967. Daniel received the award during a ceremony on March 9, and he described the moment as “surreal.” His journey at SUNY Empire began in the fall of 2023, following his associate degree from SUNY Broome Community College, earned three years prior.
Encouraged by a friend, Daniel chose SUNY Empire for its flexible online format, allowing him to balance his studies and work commitments. He appreciated the support from the university, saying, “They helped me work around my schedule.” This flexibility was crucial in helping him settle into university life.
With his degree now completed, Daniel is focused on continuing his work as a youth care advocate at a nonprofit organization that aids young adults. He also aspires to become a student advisor or counselor in the school system. “I’ve been working with kids for 10 years now,” he shares. “I feel like that’s where my passion is.”
Daniel’s story reflects a growing trend in education where flexibility is vital. Recent surveys show that over 70% of students seek institutions that provide online learning options. For many, like Daniel, this flexibility is essential for managing work and study simultaneously. Additionally, the role of youth care advocates is becoming increasingly important as more young adults face challenges in accessing housing and support services.
