Indian Railways is embarking on an exciting journey to enhance travel and connectivity in West Bengal. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on March 14, 2026, several railway projects will be unveiled, aiming to upgrade the rail network and improve passenger experiences across the state.
One of the key projects is the launch of the Purulia–Anand Vihar Terminal (Delhi) Express. This new train route will connect Purulia district directly to the national capital for the first time. This is a big win for residents looking to travel to Delhi and neighboring regions like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand. The train will benefit:

Furthermore, six railway stations are set to be revamped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. These stations—Kamakhyaguri, Tamluk, Haldia, Barabhum, Anara, and Siuri—will receive upgrades like modern waiting areas, improved lighting, and better accessibility features. This will make travel not just easier, but also more comfortable for passengers.
To bolster rail capacity, a new third rail line between Belda and Dantan, covering about 16 km, will be dedicated. This line will improve logistics and commuter traffic on a busy route. Additionally, the implementation of the Automatic Block Signalling (ABS) system between Kalaikunda and Kanimohuli will enhance safety by allowing trains to run at shorter intervals on signal blocks. This technology is part of a wider effort to improve safety and efficiency in rail operations.
These developments are part of a larger transformation in West Bengal’s railway infrastructure. Since 2014, nearly 1,400 km of new tracks have been laid. The entire railway network in the state is now electrified, making train operations faster and more environmentally friendly.
Safety is a top priority as well. Over 500 rail flyovers and underpasses have been constructed to minimize accidents at level crossings. The Kavach Automatic Train Protection system is being installed across many railway routes to add an extra layer of safety.
Overall, Indian Railways is investing around ₹93,000 crore in West Bengal. This funding will support new lines, station upgrades, and safety initiatives, showing a significant boost from earlier budgets. With these enhancements, West Bengal is becoming a strategic hub that connects the Northeast to the rest of India, fostering regional development and economic growth.
