Mississippi Coast chef Austin Sumrall recently showcased his culinary skills on Food Network’s “Beat Bobby Flay.” Competing against Florida chef Alexia Gawlak, the episode, titled “Southern Comfort,” aired last week but was filmed two years ago in New York. Sumrall has also competed on shows like “Chopped” and “Alex vs. America,” making his mark in the cooking competition scene.
In the first round, both chefs used bacon as their main ingredient. Sumrall wowed the judges with four unique dishes, including a bacon and leek soubise, mustard greens with bacon, bacon lardon, and pangrattato with gremolata. Gawlak, on the other hand, prepared a simple bacon lettuce wrap. Celebrity judges Jeff Mauro and Carson Kressley ultimately named Sumrall the winner of this round.
The challenge continued as Sumrall went head-to-head with Bobby Flay, each creating their own version of tomato pie. Sumrall’s pie was inspired by his restaurant, White Pillars, featuring tomatoes, white cheddar, parmesan, and a unique goat cheese ice cream made with liquid nitrogen. Flay’s version included pimento cheese and a fresh tomato salad. In a close decision, Flay emerged as the winner, judged by three New York chefs.
Sumrall’s appearance is a significant moment for the Mississippi Coast’s food scene, which has seen a surge in popularity. This growth comes after years of diversification among local restaurants. Recently, Sumrall was named a semifinalist for Best Chef: South by the James Beard Foundation, marking his second nomination. His restaurants, White Pillars and Siren Social Club in Gulfport, have even caught the attention of the Michelin Guide.
According to a recent survey by the James Beard Foundation, interest in regional cuisine is on the rise, highlighting the importance of local chefs like Sumrall in putting their areas on the culinary map. In an interview, Sumrall praised Flay, describing him as “easy to talk to and super down to earth.” He added, “They were great and super fun to work with. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”
The Mississippi Coast is truly carving out its place in the food world, thanks to passionate chefs and a growing appreciation for their unique flavors. For the latest updates on culinary trends, you can check out Food & Wine.
