South Orange, N.J. – The UConn softball team faced a tough loss against the Seton Hall Pirates on Friday, falling 5-4 thanks to a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Freshman Caprice Bohmer started strong but had to leave early after a line drive hit her in the second inning. Amber Bretton, a sophomore, stepped in and pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one run on only two hits.
Seton Hall struck first in the 2nd inning with a two-run single, taking a 2-0 lead. UConn struggled at the plate, failing to get a hit until the 5th inning, when senior Kaitlyn Kibling drew a walk and senior Savannah Ring broke the no-hitter with a double. Haley Coupal then helped the team score their first run with an infield single.
Seton Hall quickly responded, adding another run in the 5th to make it 3-1. Jessica Walter, who has made 17 appearances this season, took over for Bretton and finished the game, giving up two runs.
However, UConn mounted a thrilling comeback in the 7th inning. Cat Petteys doubled, scoring Kibling. Coupal then tied the game with a single, bringing home Ring. Kaitlyn Breslin gave UConn the lead after reaching on an error, letting Petteys score. The Huskies were up 4-3.
But Seton Hall’s Katey Brennan had the last word, hitting a walk-off two-run homer to clinch the game 5-4.
This matchup highlights the nail-biting nature of softball, where momentum can shift quickly. Recent studies show that walk-off wins have a significant emotional impact on teams, with players often feeling exhilarated or devastated.
