An explosion occurred early today at a Jewish school in Amsterdam. The city’s mayor, Femke Halsema, labeled it a “targeted attack against the Jewish community.”
The blast damaged the outer wall of the school in Buitenveldert, the modern Jewish quarter home to synagogues, schools, and Jewish restaurants. Authorities have security footage of the suspect who allegedly detonated the bomb.
“This is a cowardly act of aggression towards the Jewish community,” Halsema stated. This incident follows a series of antisemitic acts in Europe, prompting heightened security measures in Amsterdam after similar events in Rotterdam and Liège.
Just days ago, an explosion in Rotterdam ignited a fire at a synagogue entrance. Four teenage boys, aged 17 to 19, were arrested near another synagogue when their erratic driving caught police attention. Although the fire caused by the explosion was short-lived, no injuries were reported.
In Belgium, a synagogue in Liège also experienced an explosion, described as an antisemitic attack. Meanwhile, in Michigan, a synagogue was targeted in a car-ramming incident. While the motives remain unclear, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel indicated a connection to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, noting that the suspect targeted a place called Temple Israel.
Recently, antisemitic incidents across Europe have surged. According to a 2022 report by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, 90% of Jewish people in Europe feel unsafe. This growing fear highlights the need for greater awareness and preventive measures against such hate-fueled violence.
The rise in antisemitism, particularly amid the ongoing tensions related to the US-Israel conflict, raises serious concerns. The attack in Amsterdam contributes to a worrying trend where places of worship become targets rather than havens.
