Exclusive: Paramount Declines Max Landis’s G.I. Joe Treatment – What This Means for Fans

Paramount Pictures and Hasbro have decided not to move forward with a new G.I. Joe film written by Max Landis. This news comes from multiple sources who spoke with Variety. Landis, the son of director John Landis, had pitched a unique take on the iconic toy franchise.

Recently, Paramount has new leadership focusing on revamping their major properties, which also includes “Star Trek.” They rejected Landis’ script for creative reasons but are actively seeking other writers, including Danny McBride from “The Righteous Gemstones.”

Landis shared his thoughts on Instagram, expressing gratitude for the opportunity. He explained that the idea he pitched involved the villain Cobra successfully taking over the world, leaving G.I. Joe as just a rumor. Landis noted that big IP development is always complicated, and he was surprised the news was even reported.

While Paramount hasn’t commented on this decision, Landis’ career has faced challenges since allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced in 2016. Following these accusations, he lost several projects and was dropped by his agency.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first controversy involving Paramount. The studio was also linked to a new “Rush Hour” film from Brett Ratner, another industry figure facing serious allegations. The challenges don’t stop there; Paramount’s president, Jeff Shell, is under investigation for leaking sensitive information.

As for G.I. Joe, the franchise itself has had ups and downs over the years. The original toy line debuted in 1964, and the first live-action film hit theaters in 2009. Despite mixed reviews, the brand has maintained a nostalgic charm for many fans.

In recent surveys, 64% of fans expressed a desire for a more serious tone in future G.I. Joe films, contrasting with past adaptations that leaned heavily on humor and action.

This decision by Paramount highlights the complexities of adapting beloved characters while addressing past controversies. The future of G.I. Joe remains uncertain, but the studio’s commitment to refreshing its iconic IP is clear.
