As spring approaches, Chattanoogans are eagerly getting ready for warmer days. Recently, a local initiative saw over 1,000 trees and bushes rehomed at the Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center. This event, sponsored by EPB and the City of Chattanooga, is part of the Free Tree Re-Leaf program that encourages community members to green their spaces.
Families enjoyed the fun of choosing from 13 types of local trees and shrubs. Lauren Russek, the Lead Naturalist at the nature center, noted how this has become an annual tradition for many families. “It’s lovely to see people come together for this,” she said.
The Free Tree Re-Leaf program takes place twice a year—once in spring and once in fall. Russek highlighted that trees offer more than beauty; they also help manage stormwater and reduce heat, which can lower energy costs. “Trees play a significant role in our ecosystem,” she explained. Growing more greenery can create a cooler urban environment and improve air quality.
This year’s event reflects growing public interest in sustainability. A recent survey indicated that 68% of Americans believe that planting trees is an effective way to combat climate change. Events like this not only promote environmental awareness but also foster community spirit.
With 13 native varieties available, there are plenty of options to choose from. This collaboration sets a precedent for future initiatives, showing that when the community works together towards a common goal, great things can happen.
