HARRISBURG, Pa. — Strong winds swept across the Midwest, leading to widespread power outages and dangerous conditions. Over 346,000 people in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan were left without electricity on Saturday, according to PowerOutage.us.
Pittsburgh International Airport recorded winds at a staggering 66 mph, one of the strongest gusts not associated with a thunderstorm. In Cleveland, gusts reached 85 mph. These winds caused major damage, taking down trees, signs, and even the roof of a school building in Illinois.
In Nebraska, high winds fueled wildfires that have already burned 735 square miles across multiple counties. Tragically, one person lost their life due to these fires. Local residents, like Chelle Ladely, are worried about their homes and neighbors as smoke fills the air. Many farmers are coming together, using their water trucks to help combat the flames and support emergency efforts.
By midday Saturday, an additional 225 square miles had burned due to other wildfires, totaling nearly 938 square miles affected. The strong winds have made it difficult for firefighters to gain control, as noted by the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency. Governor Jim Pillen visited the affected areas to assess the damage.
In Chicago, despite the weather chaos, locals celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with a parade and festivities. Severe weather patterns have been impacting many regions, from heavy rains in Hawaii to expected snowstorms in the Midwest.
Recent reports show that weather events are becoming more extreme. For instance, a “triple-threat March megastorm” is forecasted to hit beginning Sunday, bringing snow and dangerous travel conditions. AccuWeather meteorologist John Feerick notes that this pattern of extreme weather doesn’t just affect the mainland but has also been felt in places like Hawaii.
