COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball faced off against sixth-ranked Auburn and unfortunately lost both games of the doubleheader at Taylor Stadium. The scores were 4-3 in extra innings and 9-2.
In the first game, the Tigers (15-5, 0-3 SEC) made a thrilling comeback in the eighth inning. With two outs, Kam Durnin and Jase Woita hit back-to-back singles to tie the game at 3-3, forcing the game into extra innings. However, Auburn (17-2, 3-0 SEC) scored the winning run in the 10th inning, clinching the game at 4-3.
The second game started off as a tight pitchers’ duel. It was tied at 1-1 as they entered the seventh inning. Mizzou’s starter, Brady Kehlenbrink, struggled in that inning, which led to Auburn scoring seven runs in a single frame. The Tigers ultimately lost 9-2.
Game One Highlights
Both teams initially put on a strong defensive display, with Mizzou’s Josh McDevitt throwing an impressive 6.1 innings. He allowed just two runs on three hits while striking out a career-high ten batters. In fact, he struck out eight consecutive batters at one point. This performance is part of a trend; he has now recorded six or more strikeouts in every start this season.
Woita was particularly electric in this game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and extending his hitting streak to 14 games. Serna, another player to watch, had a solid afternoon with a hit that led to an RBI following a groundout by Mateo Serna.
Auburn took a 3-1 lead before Mizzou’s comeback. They started the eighth inning strong, with a hit by Sam Parker followed by a sacrifice bunt from Eric Maisonet. This set the stage for the crucial singles from Durnin and Woita that tied the game.
Auburn scored the winning run in the 10th, ending Mizzou’s hopes of victory.
Game Two Insights
In the second game, Kehlenbrink pitched solidly for six innings, but Auburn’s offense exploded in the seventh. They scored seven runs on six hits, including a three-run homer. This rapid scoring meant that Mizzou couldn’t recover, leading to the final score of 9-2.
Despite the losses, some players continued to shine. Benson extended his hitting streak to ten games, and Seals contributed a multi-hit game as well. These individual performances provide a glimmer of hope for Mizzou as they look to rebound against Kansas next.
Recent statistics show that Mizzou has struggled against ranked teams this season, raising questions about their readiness as they move forward in the SEC. As of now, they sit at 0-3 in conference play. Fans on social media are voicing their support and encouraging the team to focus on the positives moving into their upcoming game.
Missouri will head to Lawrence, Kansas, on Tuesday to face the Jayhawks (10-8) in a rivalry matchup. They will be eager to snap their losing streak and regain momentum as the season progresses.
