Rahul Gandhi recently called for the Bharat Ratna to be awarded posthumously to Kanshi Ram, a significant figure in Dalit politics and the founder of the Bahujan Samaj Party. He emphasized Kanshi Ram’s critical role in elevating political awareness among marginalized communities in India, particularly the Dalits.
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, written on Kanshi Ram’s birth anniversary, Gandhi highlighted how Kanshi Ram reshaped India’s political landscape. He motivated many people who had never considered political involvement to see it as a path to justice and equality. Gandhi noted that through his activism, Kanshi Ram instilled a sense of empowerment among the Bahujan community—reminding them that their votes and voices mattered.
The Indian Constitution promises dignity and equality for all citizens. Kanshi Ram dedicated his life to making these ideals a reality for those at the bottom of society, thereby strengthening democracy in India. Many leaders and activists within the Dalit community have long urged the government to recognize his contributions.
Gandhi’s appeal follows a recent resolution in Lucknow, where various parties, including the Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party, came together to honor Kanshi Ram’s legacy. This demonstrates a growing recognition of his impact on Dalit politics, especially as elections approach in key states like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Dalits make up around 20% of the electorate in these regions, making their support crucial.
Interestingly, the discussion around Kanshi Ram has gained momentum in light of a broader push for a nationwide caste census, a core part of his philosophy. This aligns with Gandhi’s efforts to reconnect with Dalit voters, aiming to regain some of the support the Congress lost to regional parties like the BSP in recent years.
According to research from the 2021 Census, the Dalit community continues to face significant socio-economic challenges, underscoring the need for representation and advocacy. The recognition of leaders like Kanshi Ram could reinforce their fight for equality and ensure that the voices of marginalized communities are heard.
Gandhi hopes the government will acknowledge Kanshi Ram’s contributions to our nation by awarding him India’s highest civilian honor.
