Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, recently wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He requested that Kanshi Ram, the influential Bahujan leader, be awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously. Gandhi made this appeal on Kanshi Ram’s birth anniversary, highlighting his significant impact on Indian politics and society.
Kanshi Ram founded the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and played a crucial role in advocating for Dalit rights. He mobilized marginalized communities, encouraging them to seek political representation. “Kanshi Ram transformed India’s political landscape,” wrote Gandhi. He emphasized how Kanshi Ram inspired many to view politics as a path to justice and equality.
In his letter, Gandhi stressed that Kanshi Ram’s work aligned with the principles of the Indian Constitution—equality, dignity, and participation. “He dedicated his life to make these promises a reality for the most disadvantaged,” he noted. This contribution, Gandhi argued, strengthened democracy in India.
Calls for awarding the Bharat Ratna to Kanshi Ram have been persistent over the years. Many Dalit leaders and activists have voiced their support, viewing this recognition as a deeply felt need. The recent push comes amidst the Congress party’s efforts to reconnect with voters in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Earlier this year, an event called ‘Samajik Parivartan Divas’ marked Kanshi Ram’s birthday, where Gandhi participated and emphasized the call for the Bharat Ratna. However, this demand faced criticism from BSP chief Mayawati, who questioned the Congress party’s history of honoring Dalit leaders like B. R. Ambedkar.
By urging the Prime Minister to consider this request, Gandhi aims to honor Kanshi Ram’s lasting legacy and the hope he represents for millions today. Awarding him the Bharat Ratna could reinforce the importance of empowerment in Indian society, recognizing both his contributions and the ongoing struggles of marginalized communities.
Research indicates that the fight for Dalit rights and representation remains a vital issue in India today, reflecting broader social dynamics. As the conversation around Kanshi Ram’s legacy unfolds, it offers an opportunity for deeper examination of India’s commitment to equality and justice for all citizens.
