Welcome to Dandân!
Hey gamers!
Today, we’re excited to introduce Dandân, a fresh format crafted for fans of blue magic. I’m Carmen Klomparens, and along with my buddy Abe Corrigan from the Play Design team, we’ve created something special. So, what’s Dandân all about?
Dandân offers a unique gaming experience. Unlike typical Magic matches, it features longer, more strategic games where every card counts. You’ll need to fight tooth and nail for advantages, and the most intense moments will unfold on the stack.
Our ruleset varies a bit from standard Magic. Players still start with 20 life and seven cards, but check out these key differences:
- There’s a shared library and graveyard for all players.
- The “owner” of a card in play is simply the player who cast it.
- When drawing, players take turns, starting with the active player.
- If you end up with less than two lands or spells in your opening hand, you can take a free mulligan, but only once.
While handling mulligans is a bit relaxed, Dandân still holds onto the familiar structure. It’s about how you use your cards that truly defines the experience.
The Design Journey
Hi! I’m Abe Corrigan, and as a fellow game designer, I’m thrilled about what we’ve created with Dandân. Our goal was to stay true to this community-driven format while enhancing gameplay without major overhauls.
One key insight we discovered was that card advantage could be too dominant if not balanced. We wanted early Dandâns to be powerful but not overwhelming. Maintaining that balance keeps the gameplay engaging and encourages strategic thinking.
Card Highlights
For instance, we included “Control Magic.” At four mana, this card can swing games significantly, making it a vital part of Dandân’s strategy.
We also added “Chart a Course,” a cantrip that rewards players for aggressive Dandân attacks. It’s fun to weigh whether to use it early in the game or save it for later.
Another interesting choice was “Capture of Jingzhou.” This five-mana sorcery can create major game shifts and combo well with other cards. It keeps the action exciting as players strive to outmaneuver each other.
On the flip side, we excluded “Mystic Retrieval.” While usually a staple in Dandân, we found it could lead to frustrating play patterns, especially if one player had a mana advantage.
What’s fascinating is that we’ve made some huge choices to enhance gameplay. For example, removing cards like “Vision Charm,” known for its tempo disruption, allows for a more thrilling experience filled with strategic depth.
