The star at the center of this discovery, named Gaia20ehk, appeared normal until 2016 when its brightness began to fluctuate unexpectedly. By 2021, it seemed to be in chaos. “When we observed this star, we couldn’t help but wonder what was happening,” said Anastasios Tzanidakis, the study’s lead author from the University of Washington. He noted that stars like our Sun typically don’t behave this way.

The unusual flickering is believed to be caused by large clouds of rock and dust disrupting the star’s light. Researchers think this debris comes from a collision between two planets. Observations using infrared telescopes showed a spike in energy, suggesting the dust is very hot, possibly glowing.

Tzanidakis remarked that such a collision could occur as two planets spiral closer over time, eventually leading to a catastrophic impact. “It’s remarkable that we caught this in real-time,” he added. There are very few documented planetary collisions, making this observation particularly significant.

Interestingly, this event mirrors a historic collision theorized to have occurred about 4.5 billion years ago, when a planet called Theia is believed to have crashed into Earth, ultimately leading to the formation of the Moon. This connection is fascinating because the dust cloud now surrounding Gaia20ehk is at a similar distance from its star as Earth is from the Sun, hinting that it too could potentially form a moon-like body.

Tzanidakis also noted the implications for astrobiology. Our Moon plays a crucial role in regulating Earth’s environment, which is key for supporting life. It raises questions about the rarity of such events – if collisions that create large moons are uncommon, then perhaps planets capable of supporting life are rare too. “We still don’t know how common these dynamics are,” he said. Observing more of these collisions could help us unravel these cosmic mysteries.
