LAKE CHARLES, La. – Catholic Charities of Southwest Louisiana recently hosted its annual Jazz Brunch fundraiser, bringing together the community for a day filled with music and support. This event raised important funds to assist with housing, utilities, and food for families in need across five parishes.
Last year, the event raised over $63,000, a significant amount that translates directly into support for families facing challenging times. Sister Marie Josepha Kluczny, the executive director, shared that the demand for help has remained strong, particularly for rent and utility assistance. With rising costs and inflation, more residents are struggling to make ends meet.
Sister Kluczny explained, “We see a steady increase in requests. People are really feeling the pinch.” These funds help provide crucial services, including 12 monthly food distributions that serve more than 3,700 families.
Recently, the organization witnessed a touching success story. A man who once struggled with homelessness and addiction now has a stable apartment. Kluczny shared his happiness as he showed off his newly filled pantry, expressing gratitude for his new life.
Even when their housing funds are exhausted, the organization doesn’t turn people away. They offer additional services, like SNAP application assistance or food bank referrals, to help lighten the burden on struggling families.
This brunch marked the organization’s first major event since the hurricanes. Pamela Seal, the Diocese of Lake Charles’ communications director, emphasized the importance of Catholic Charities’ role during recovery efforts. “Everyone, regardless of their income, received assistance,” she noted. This community approach has made a lasting impression on many.
A highlight of the brunch was the silent auction, featuring donations from local businesses and artists. Organizers hope the event continues to grow and appreciate the community’s support.
