The actress stepped back from acting full-time in 2017 to pursue a new venture: her artisanal patisserie, Once Upon A Time. Her last role in a Mediacorp drama before this was in the 2019 series, After The Stars.
She has noted that her personality aligns closely with her character, emphasizing directness. “There’s no need to beat around the bush,” she stated. “If you have something to say, just say it directly.” However, this straightforwardness has sometimes made her seem strict on set.
She shared that her high expectations can create pressure for her co-stars. “I expect a lot from myself and, unintentionally, I expect the same from others. Sometimes, my directness can hurt feelings,” she admitted.
Yet, Aw feels different now. “I’ve become happier and more relaxed,” she said. She recalls a time when she was reluctant to engage with fellow cast members while filming. “When I would go on set, I just wanted to focus on acting. I didn’t want to talk about anything else,” she revealed.
Now, things have changed for her. “I’m curious about people and want to know their thoughts,” she explained, highlighting how this newfound interest has helped shift her interactions. A significant factor in this transformation has been her experience hosting her YouTube series, JA Unscripted. Through this platform, she has learned to open up and connect with others.
According to a recent survey by the Screen Actors Guild, many actors face similar pressures related to performance and workplace dynamics. The survey showed that about 60% of actors feel a high level of stress due to expectations on set. Aw’s journey reflects an important shift not just in her interactions but also in the evolving culture of film and television, where mental health awareness is becoming increasingly significant.
As the entertainment industry continues to change with more emphasis on well-being and communication, Aw serves as a reminder that personal growth can lead to better collaborations and richer experiences for everyone involved.
