Buying a cheap Bentley Flying Spur might sound like a wild idea, but some people actually take the plunge. One such person is YouTuber Sreten from M539 Restorations. He found a Bentley that originally cost around $275,000 for just $12,500, despite it having over 160,000 miles on it. However, it was in rough shape—rust, electrical issues, and even mold collected in the interior. Still, the engine seemed to have potential.
Once Sreten brought the car to his shop, he got to work. He fixed sunroof leaks, dried the moldy interior, and even tackled a leaky rear brake. The project looked promising until he took it for a drive and the engine began to overheat.
After some investigation, Sreten discovered that the overheating problem had been an issue for years. The plastic coolant tank had swelled, indicating a bigger problem. He used a block tester and found combustion gases in the coolant, signaling potential issues like a blown head gasket. But when he inspected further, he realized that only a cylinder head bolt was stretched. That meant extra pressure was causing gases to leak into the coolant.
Replacing a single bolt wasn’t the ideal fix, but because the car was in such rough shape, Sreten decided to attempt it. Unfortunately, the overheating persisted. He was left to troubleshoot further, replacing old sensors and radiator fans. He even discovered that a previous owner had taken out the thermostat, hoping to keep the coolant flowing continuously. But the overheating continued without any clear reason.
Finally, Sreten uncovered a blockage in the radiator. He replaced it, and that did the trick. Now, the W12 engine was alive and running smoothly. However, there’s still a bad turbo boost solenoid keeping it in limp mode, which requires a more complicated fix involving removing the entire engine.
Sreten’s total spent on the Bentley has reached $16,431, and there’s still more work to do. Despite the challenges, this story shows just how resilient Volkswagen’s W12 engine is. It endured years of overheating, stretching head bolts and damaging parts, yet it continues to run strong. This highlights a common misconception: while luxury cars like Bentley can seem daunting to work on, they can also prove to be surprisingly tough.
In fact, expert mechanics often emphasize that understanding the history and previous maintenance of a car is crucial before buying one, especially luxury models. Neglect can lead to bigger problems down the road. In Sreten’s case, the journey of reviving the Bentley offers valuable lessons about perseverance and repair. It shows how even a high-end vehicle, given the right care, can be brought back to life.
