New Delhi, March 16 – Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to honor Manyavar Kanshi Ram, the founder of the Bahujan Samaj Party, with the Bharat Ratna, posthumously.
In his letter dated March 15, Gandhi emphasized Kanshi Ram’s pivotal role in reshaping Indian politics. He highlighted how Kanshi Ram raised awareness among Bahujans and the marginalized, encouraging them to realize the significance of their votes and their voices in the democratic process. “Kanshi Ram made many understand that politics could be a tool for justice and equality,” Gandhi wrote.
Gandhi pointed out that the Indian Constitution guarantees equality and participation for all citizens. He praised Kanshi Ram for dedicating his life to uphold these principles, particularly for those at the bottom of the social hierarchy. “He strengthened our democracy and made our political system more inclusive,” he stated.
For years, there has been a strong call from Dalit intellectuals and activists for Kanshi Ram to receive this honor. During a recent event in Lucknow, this sentiment was expressed passionately, reflecting a widespread desire to recognize his contributions.
Gandhi believes that granting the Bharat Ratna to Kanshi Ram would acknowledge his significant impact and resonate with millions who view him as a beacon of empowerment. “This honor would serve as a tribute not just to him but to the entire movement, which guided many in their quest for rights and dignity,” he noted in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Expert opinion supports Gandhi’s stance. Dr. Udit Raj, a well-known social activist and former Member of Parliament, stated, “Kanshi Ram’s work was foundational for many social movements. Recognizing him with such honors can inspire future generations to engage in politics for social justice.”
The demand for Kanshi Ram’s recognition is not only a reminder of his legacy but also a reflection of how far India has come in its understanding of social justice and representation. In recent years, social media has amplified these calls, with hashtags celebrating Kanshi Ram trending during discussions on social justice.
In conclusion, awarding the Bharat Ratna to Kanshi Ram would signify a commitment to acknowledging the contributions of those who fought for equality and justice in India, reinforcing the core values of the nation.
