Welcome to the Skull Session! It’s that exciting time of year again: NCAA Tournament week. Basketball is in full swing, and I’m here to share my love for the game.
This year, 39 players from Ohio are competing in the tournament. This is a record number since our friend Garrick Hodge started tracking Ohioans in March Madness. In previous years, we had 27 players in 2024 and 34 in 2025. It’s great to see the growth in talent from our state!
Here’s a quick rundown of some standout players:
- John Mobley Jr., Ohio State
- Gabe Cupps, Ohio State
- Darryn Peterson, Kansas
- Kobe Rodgers, Louisville
- Shawn Phillips Jr., Missouri
This year, Ohio State is ranked No. 28 overall in the tournament. Senior Bruce Thornton has been a standout player, averaging 20.2 points per game. His contributions are not just significant for the team but also for the future of Ohio basketball.
Interestingly, current trends show that college basketball is leaning towards a more data-driven approach. Programs are increasingly using advanced analytics to scout and strategize. A recent study shared by Belmont men’s basketball’s director of strategy showed how video scouting reports can make game preparation much more effective. These reports cover every NCAA team and can last up to 18 hours!
I remember being a kid, watching players like Greg Oden and Mike Conley. Their skills inspired many young athletes. As a former player, I spent countless hours in my driveway, pretending to be them. It’s these moments that sparked my passion for basketball, and I hope future generations feel the same excitement and inspiration.
As we celebrate the tournament, let’s appreciate the athletes who represent Ohio and the joy they bring to the game. March Madness isn’t just about winning; it’s about the memories and dreams that basketball creates.
And speaking of inspiration, let’s take a moment to recognize Thad Matta, who recently retired after an incredible coaching career. His leadership at Ohio State has shaped many players’ paths, and his legacy will always be cherished.
The excitement of this year’s tournament is palpable. Let’s see how far these Ohio teams go, and may the best team win!
