The Cyprus EU Presidency has identified sustainability, biodiversity protection, resilience, and competitiveness as top priorities, according to Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeades. This announcement came after a productive meeting of the Environment Council in Brussels on March 17.
Vafeades emphasized that addressing climate change and environmental challenges is more urgent than ever. The European Union is committed to a cleaner, greener future. A significant part of this effort is a proposal to amend carbon dioxide emission standards for cars and vans. This move aims to enhance Europe’s automotive sector and ensure steady investments, especially as the industry faces global competitiveness issues.
During the meeting, there was a collective goal to strengthen industrial competitiveness while meeting climate targets. The EU aims for zero-emission mobility, supporting innovation, and protecting jobs. The discussions provided valuable insights for Europe to remain a leader in climate action and ensure an inclusive transition.
The EU has also set a climate target for 2040. Ministers will focus on creating a solid policy framework to achieve these goals, with further discussions planned for June in the Transport and Energy Council. Vafeades noted that ministers are committed to balancing environmental goals with economic realities.
Additionally, ministers discussed insights from COP30, focusing on enhancing international outreach and formulating a multi-year strategy for COP31. This strategy will aim to define the EU’s objectives and strengthen its negotiating power in global discussions, especially regarding plastic pollution.
The ministers also greenlit conclusions on the EU bioeconomy strategy, which seeks to boost innovation, create green jobs, and ensure the bioeconomy is competitive and inclusive.
