SpaceX has hit a major milestone: over 10,000 active Starlink satellites are now orbiting Earth. This impressive achievement comes nearly seven years after the company began building its broadband constellation. Recently, two launches added 54 new satellites to the mix—25 from California and 29 from Florida.
Currently, there are 10,049 Starlink satellites in operation, with just a few not functioning. Tracking expert Jonathan McDowell notes that while many have launched since 2019, a significant number have reentered the atmosphere and burned up.
The recent launches were significant, with SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket completing its 14th successful mission. After launching from California, the rocket touched down on a droneship in the Pacific Ocean. Similarly, another Falcon 9 launched from Cape Canaveral, marking its 11th successful landing on an Atlantic droneship.
This year alone, SpaceX has completed 34 Falcon 9 missions and 378 Starlink launches overall. The rapid expansion of the Starlink network is transforming internet access, particularly for underserved regions. Experts believe that reliable internet can boost economic prospects and education access in remote areas. According to a 2022 survey, 80% of rural users reported improvement in their work and education due to Starlink.
As more satellites join the constellation, the potential for global connectivity continues to grow. Social media is buzzing with user feedback highlighting faster internet speeds and improved reliability. As Starlink strives to bridge the digital divide, it remains a focal point in discussions about the future of technology and connectivity.
