Music Therapy Week 2026 is coming soon! From April 10 to 15, people across Aotearoa will celebrate the positive impact of music on health and wellbeing. This week, organized by Music Therapy New Zealand, will focus on the theme “Weaving Connections | Te Poutama Hononga.”
This theme highlights how music can unite people and share their stories. It emphasizes the strong ties between wellbeing, identity, and shared experiences, particularly from a te ao Māori perspective.
Music therapy is utilized in various environments, including hospitals, schools, and community programs. It helps individuals facing physical, emotional, cognitive, and social challenges. Music serves as a means of communication and a way to express feelings and build connections.
During Music Therapy Week, there will be workshops, events, and community sessions designed to raise awareness about the profession and its benefits. Music therapists will actively engage with families and communities to showcase how therapy through music can promote healing and resilience.
Organizers note that this week is not just about celebrating music therapy as a profession but also about fostering connections, especially for those who may need better access to therapeutic support. This aligns with a broader trend recognizing the importance of holistic approaches to health, where creative and cultural practices contribute significantly to wellbeing.
Interestingly, recent studies show that music therapy can reduce anxiety and improve mood among patients with chronic illnesses. According to research from the American Music Therapy Association, nearly 70% of patients reported feeling less anxious after just a few sessions. This underscores music’s role not just as entertainment but as a potent tool for healing and transformation.
