Blue Origin, the space company founded by Jeff Bezos, is stepping up to protect our planet from asteroids with its new initiative called NEO Hunter. This mission, in collaboration with NASA and Caltech, aims to develop innovative technologies for asteroid defense. At the core of the NEO Hunter mission are advanced technologies designed to stop potentially catastrophic asteroid collisions. The spacecraft will launch small satellites, called cubesats, that will gather essential data on asteroids, including their size and speed. By learning about these space rocks, scientists can determine how best to change their paths if needed.

A key feature of this mission is the use of ion beam technology. This method directs a stream of charged particles toward an asteroid, much like the approach used in NASA’s DART mission, which successfully redirected the asteroid Dimorphos in 2022. By gently nudging an asteroid with this focused beam, NEO Hunter offers a way to prevent disasters without blowing things up.

Another innovative approach in the mission is called “Robust Kinetic Disruption.” Should the asteroid be too large or fast for the ion beam, this backup plan involves sending the spacecraft straight into the asteroid at speeds reaching 22,600 mph (36,370 kph). This direct impact can make a substantial change in the asteroid’s path, and a small satellite will record the impact for scientific study, similar to the outcomes from the DART mission.

The growing focus on planetary defense highlights its importance in today’s world. Although asteroid impacts are rare, they can cause massive destruction. Recent events, like a meteorite crashing through a roof in Germany and near-miss asteroids passing between Earth and the Moon, have raised awareness about these risks.

While astronomers are continually tracking near-Earth objects (NEOs), no immediate threats have been identified. However, initiatives like NEO Hunter help prepare us for future challenges. As asteroid defense technologies advance, we get closer to protecting our planet from these ancient hazards.
