New Health Center Opening in Newark for Community Wellness
In Newark, a new health initiative is taking shape with the South Ward Wellness Center. This project, a collaboration between RWJBarnabas Health, BRICK Networks, Saint James Health Center, and the Newark YMCA, aims to improve healthcare in underserved areas. With an investment of $3 million from RWJBarnabas Health, the center is part of their mission to enhance patient access and health outcomes.
Mark E. Manigan, CEO of RWJBarnabas Health, emphasized that their goal is to foster a healthier New Jersey. The wellness center will be more than just a building; it will serve as a hub for healthcare and social support, meeting the community’s needs. Plans include incorporating Community Health Workers and SNAP Navigators to offer personalized assistance.
The urgency for this project is clear. Community feedback revealed a strong desire for better healthcare access, affordable food, and maternal care. Dominique Lee, CEO of BRICK Networks, described the center as a response to the needs voiced by residents. The 50,000 square-foot facility will include a pharmacy, maternity care, and spaces for health and cooking education.
This endeavor is already gaining momentum. The total funding for construction is set at $48 million, with additional contributions from various foundations, including the Victoria Foundation. The leadership believes this model can break cycles of inequity in the region.
Michael Bright, CEO of the YMCA of Newark and Vicinity, highlighted the importance of integrating fitness and healthcare. The center aims to bring together physical wellness and medical care, making health more accessible to families.
Community partnerships are crucial for this project’s success. Craig Drinkard of the Victoria Foundation expressed hope that it will create a stronger support network for Newark residents.
As the center prepares to open in April 2027, it stands as a beacon of hope for many in the South Ward. This initiative not only aims to provide health services but also to empower the community, fostering resilience and growth.
